YEAR 3

This week the students have been assessed in Reading and Mathematics. In Maths, we assess their arithmetic knowledge as well as problem solving and reasoning. The results will help identify any gaps in learning and show progress made. It has been pleasing to see the children’s confidence even when faced with challenging problems. We’ve also has a lot of fun learning about one of our favourite authors, Anthony Browne, a celebrated author of sophisticated picture books. His books all have a very strong theme and are illustrated with lots of hidden imagery. Well worth adding them to your home library.

YEAR 4

We finished reading ‘Sabryna and the River Spirit’, a story that ends happily with the people living in harmony with their natural environment. As an environmental activist, Sybrina had succeeded in reminding everyone of the serious consequences, if they didn’t change their ways.

As we have reached the end of Spring Term, we wrote Reading, Arithmetic and Problem-solving tests. Some questions were quite easy to answer; others were a bit more challenging!

In Science, we learnt about the eating habits and digestive system of cattle and birds. We were surprised to discover that a cow has one stomach with four compartments and a bird has two parts. When a cow chews its food for a second time, it is said to be chewing the cud. Birds eat sand and grit to help them digest their food. How strange!

In our Topic lesson, we learnt that young people’s lives were very different in the 1960s, compared to today’s young people. This decade was called the ‘Swinging Sixties’ because music brought about revolutionary changes and teenagers wanted more freedom!

To celebrate the coming of spring, we are creating beautiful tulips. During Golden Time, we had great fun playing our Harry Potter Monopoly board game. Phew! Another busy, fun-filled week!

YEAR 5

As the last snow is melting and the weather is improving, we are also getting ready for new beginnings in the Year 5 group.
In Geometry we explored Quadrilaterals, which is a fancy name for shapes with 4 sides. Polygons is another word used to refer to shapes with more that 3 sides. We learnt how to construct quadrilaterals, measure their angles, and establish weather their sides are parallel or not. English was the most exciting subject of the week though. Continuing our studies of the "Museum of Fun", we wrote a Quiz and a Television Advertisement as part of our campaign to promote the museum to school children. The students had the opportunity to show off their ICT skills by designing a Power Point Presentation for the Quiz. Their Verbal Skills were developed by an Oral where they had to present a live Television Advertisement. The photos attached bear witness to their great work! Finally, we wrote 3 Tests this week: an English Reading Test, Arithmetic, and Problem Solving. The students all did well in the tests, and I will be proud to share their results with you next week.
