YEAR 3

This week year 3 wrote some sensational simile poems! Here are some of the children’s favourite lines.

My mum is as beautiful as a princess - Seunghee

My mum is as sweet as candy- Maxim

My mum is lovely like a diamond- Anastasia

My mum is as cuddly as a teddy bear- Xinyi and Yahel

My mum is as busy as a bee- Alexandra

My mum is fun like a monkey- Maya

My mum is beautiful like a flower- Jarek

My mum is beautiful like a diamond- Maria

Miss Katya has been teaching the children to make sounds out of air and vibrations using ‘boomwhackers’.They learned that the different lengths produce different sounds and can now play 2 songs. All agreed that it was interesting and a lot of fun.

Everyone knows to recycle, reuse and reduce waste, especially plastic. This week we talked a lot about the 4th r, refuse. Year 3 have come to the conclusion that if we all refuse using single use plastic, there will be less plastic in our landfills and oceans.

YEAR 4

We continued reading ‘Sabryna and the River Spirit’ and learnt to identify similes, such as ‘Sybrina’s hair bubbled like river rapids’ and onomatopoeia, words like ‘bang’ and ‘swish’.

In Mathematics, we discovered that triangles can be classified according to their sides: scalene, isosceles and equilateral triangles. We also learnt that the sum of the three angles of a triangle is 180°.

In Science, we discovered that the word plankton comes from the Greek word ‘planktos’ meaning drifter, and that phytoplankton (tiny plants) and zooplankton (tiny animals) form an important part of the food web in the oceans of the world.

In our Topic lesson, we designed our very own posters to advertise the 1940 movie, ‘Fantasia’, featuring Mickey Mouse who creates a flood as he dispenses magic as ‘The Sorcerer’s Apprentice’.

In Music, we enjoyed practising on the keyboard. As an additional Art project, we helped to make the Maslenitsa doll. As we celebrated Maslenitsa, we thoroughly enjoyed dressing in Russian traditional costumes, eating pancakes, playing games, and watching the doll being burnt. What a busy week!

YEAR 5

Whilst the weather is playing tricks on us outside the classroom, the Year 5's were studying weather and climates inside the classroom. It turns out that there are places on earth that experience far worse weather than what we experience, on a continuous basis. The highest peaks on the Himalayas, the Alps and the Rocky Mountains are extremely unpleasant places to visit, and very few people call it home. Our PSHE topic was Friendship, and I am in the process of teaching my students the value of kindness, and what it takes to be a good friend. This ideology slowly but surely seems to be reaping rewards, as I was so proud to hear the students discuss the fact that Adar should be our Star of the week because of the wonderful project she did in English. Keep up this goodness guys!I took the opportunity to extend some of my Math students to higher levels than what is expected, by introducing them to division with double digits. It seems like the students embraced this difficult challenge with great enthusiasm! They excelled in doing difficult Math problems of dividing 3 and 4-digit numbers by 2-digit numbers. How proud I am!Talking about extending and challenging - during English the students were encouraged to write a Newspaper Article about a festival or Carnival. At first they struggled to make the transition from normal essay-writing to factual and formal, but at the end they handed in some brilliant work.
