YEAR 3

Storytelling Week has been a blast! Every morning, year 3 has listened to a different story from around the world. They did a great job retelling one of the stories, My Marvellous Hat by Satoshi Kitamura and then made a class book based on it. Have you ever written a story one line at a time? Well, that’s what year 3 did this week. Someone starts a story and everyone gets to add one line. The fun part is that the writer only sees the last sentence so we ended up with some hilarious stories. Try it at home with your family!

We love reading in year 3! We especially enjoy practicing our reading skills by reading to a buddy in the class. Look how engaged the children are as they support each other reading.

In year 3, there are 3 different maths groups and this week, children added to their knowledge of fractions. Fractions are always a favourite and you can see from some of the photos how one group used cubes to show different fractions. Another group took over the year 6 classroom and had a super time learning about equivalent fractions.

YEAR 4

In the ‘The Spiderwick Chronicles’ this week, chapters 3 and 4 reveal some very strange happenings 2. Jared discovers a message, written in the dust: ‘Click clack, watch your back’ and Mallory wakes up to find that her hair has been knotted to the brass headboard. Their mother is furious with Jared because she believes he is responsible, but he knows that there is something very strange happening around them. His suspicions are confirmed, when he discovers an old, crumbling book, hidden in a chest. Curiouser and curiouser!

In Mathematics, we investigated counting on and back from a given number in steps of 25, 50 and 100 and recognising patterns. We also used the column subtraction of 3-digit and 2-digit numbers using the expanded and compact methods. Not too difficult!

In Science, exploring ‘States of Matter’, we made our own lava lamps, using oil, water, food colouring and a fizzing tablet. The oil floats on top of the water because it is less dense (lighter) than water. When you add the tablet it sinks to the bottom then starts to dissolve. As it dissolves it makes gas, carbon dioxide. Gas or air, is lighter than water so it floats to the top. The air bubbles bring some coloured water with them to the top. When the air comes out of the coloured water blob, the water gets heavy again and sinks. Amazing!

In our Topic lessons, we learnt that the Magna Carta (Latin for ‘Great Charter’”), signed in 1215, was a document that gave certain rights to the English people. The Magna Carta stated that the king must follow the law! Its influence lives on in the American Bill of Rights, written in 1791. Even more recently, its basic principles are contained in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, penned in 1948. Remarkable!

In our PSHE lesson, we watched a videoclip, titled ‘Communicate Assertively’. We discovered that some people are passive communicators; other aggressive! But assertive communicators are people who speak up for themselves in a calm way and express their opinions! Assertive communication is the way to go!

YEAR 5

The Year 5's had a busy and interesting week. As part of "Story Week" we got to know Shakespeare better by reading Romeo and Juliet. We plan to put together a Romeo and Juliet play next week, and the students got quite passionate when it was time for choosing the roles each of them will play!We further engaged in our book "Oranges in No Man's Land", and when Mr. Ward observed our students reading, he was quite impressed by the improvement in the reading skills of the class. Well done Year 5!During the Math lessons we started with Rounding large numbers as well as decimal numbers, a topic that proved to be challenging but exciting once it was understood. We finished our section about Elements that shape our Planet, and then started with Living Things as part of Biology. During PSHE our aim is to learn about Relationships and Self Esteem, both topics dear to me.

ART

In year 5 children did a great job, when they designed their own version of a St. Basil style cathedral. They included: onion domes at the top of each building, various height structures, and many different patterns and colours. The finished projects look beautiful!

Year 5 had a cartoon sticker/cross stitching club this week. The children could choose what they wanted to make. Some children chose to draw with special markers and made their own stickers while some chose cross stitch.

MUSIC

Year 3 have learned about Antonio Vivaldi and the musical instruments of that time.Year 4 have explored Aerophones instruments. The students have played on the Boomwhacker. They have found these new instruments very funny.
