YEAR 3

It has been very relaxed in Year 3 this week as we have had a focus on assessments for reading, Maths and Science.

In our English lessons we have been recapping spelling rules covered this half term and beginning the setting of our ‘Mowgli’s Brothers’ stories and focusing on descriptive language that encourages the reader to take interest in our story.

In Maths, we have completed the first set of assessments for the term and the hard work and positive attitude toward their work in the subject has been reflected in the results of many.

In Topic and Science, we have also completed our termly assessments on rainforests and parts of plants.

Finally in PSHE, we have continued looking at My Hidden Chimp, drawing what our chimps look like and identifying when our ‘chimp’ brain is taking over our rational one.

YEAR 4

This week, in English, our biggest challenge was to complete our Reading tests, which required very careful reading of the texts given to us. Especially challenging were the inferential questions, which do not have a direct answer within the text. This means that we had to use to use clues from a text and our background knowledge to give a smart answer.

In Maths, we investigated 3D shapes, such as cubes, cuboids, triangular prisms, spheres and tetrahedrons. It was so interesting looking at each shape to count their faces, edges and vertices. We also completed Arithmetic and Problem-solving Tests. Challenging, but not too difficult!

In Topic lessons, we are building a Confucian temple, a place where people worship Confucius as a spirit rather than a god. In Science, we are having fun, exploring the mysteries of the Universe.

In our Art lesson, we completed painting scenes, featuring gondolas in Venice. We are so proud of our work!

YEAR 5

Another exciting and busy week flew by as quickly as the wink of an eye.
During our English lessons we started reading an e-book named "Ultimate Explorers". This non-fiction book makes us aware of famous people in history that undertook journeys to far-off places in the quest to discover new horizons. We read about a few exciting and unusual explorers: Mary Kingsley who was one of the first female explorers in an age when women were expected to stay at home, Hiram Bingham who didn't really discover anything, and Ernest Shackleton who didn't show good leadership qualities. Just as we thought that none of the explorers in our book are good, we learnt about Edmund Hillary whose amazing leadership skills enabled him to be the first person in history who conquered Mount Everest. We decided what interesting places we would like to explore, and typed an essay in Word using the Future Simple tense.
In Maths we are busy with Revision of all the work we did in Year 5, making sure that we understand all the calculations needed for Year 6. I realized that we need to do a lot of Word Problems as the children still have difficulty in understanding what calculations need to be done.
Our journey through Japan led us to explore the kimono, Yin Yang, dragons, volcanoes, architecture and much more. We ended our exciting journey by folding paper models of a Japanese Temple. As our topic of Japan came to an end, we all decided that we would put Japan on our bucket list of places to explore one day.
