YEAR 3

A very busy week for Book Week in Year 3. In English we have had a range of guest (teacher) readers introducing a range of short stories by an Australian children’s author, Paul Jennings. The children have been engaged and excited by his stories (just like their teacher 25 years ago. We have also been designing our own alternative covers for our favourite stories. Some of these have been really interesting and creative.

We have also been writing our biographies of famous inventors, identifying nouns, verbs and using these to insert adjectives and adverbs into our independent writing.

In Maths we have been focusing on two of the four operations – addition and multiplication. We have focused on learning the 8 times tables and building our automatic mental retrieval of this times table, as well as selected students tasked with completing a challenging problem-solving activity looking at squared numbers.

In Science we have begun a new unit on magnets and forces by exploring the meaning of key scientific vocabulary.

YEAR 4

The focus of our Year 4 lessons this week have been largely literacy based to celebrate International Book Week.

In English we have been reading a fantasy book: ‘The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe’ from the Chronicles of Narnia trilogy. Throughout the week we have been carrying out reading activities based around vocabulary, story themes and character development to develop our comprehension and inference skills. The children have enjoyed the book a lot.

In Math, we have been continuing to learn about decimal numbers. We have revised how to locate fractions and decimals on a number line and convert decimals into fractions and vice versa. We have also learnt how to multiply and divide whole and decimal numbers by 10 and 100.

During Topic and Science lessons this week the children worked as a team to design the decorations for the classroom door display. For our door design we created an illusion of looking through a wardrobe into the magical winter wonderland of Narnia which is the main setting in ‘The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe’ book. The children also designed their own book-mark.

YEAR 5

Year 5 have had a lot of fun this week where the focus has been on reading, culminating in the celebration of World Book Day on Thursday 4th March. We have only managed to finish reading our shared class reader, ‘Oranges in No Man’s Land’ where the children have had the pleasure of having this read to them by guest teachers every afternoon this week. This has been fantastic.

We have had a range of different activities to complete as a class such as decorating our classroom door which the children have done together in small groups and then combined their different ideas together. This has been all their own work which is always impressive. Wednesday morning was dedicated to our presentations about our favourite book which Ms Hitchcocks also sat in with and enjoyed. I was really impressed with everyone’s commitment to this task which was set as a homework. It was clear that almost everyone had prepared well for this. Public speaking and presentation are difficult and nerve-wrecking but I was delighted with how everyone stood up and spoke to an audience.

The week has ended with the children balancing a costume with practical and active subjects like PE so yet another fabulous week for Year 5. Well done and enjoy the long weekend!

YEAR 6

This week has been very busy for us in Year 6. We have been planning, preparing, and creating an amazing book cover for our door. Mr. Marsh said we had to do everything ourselves and that the teachers were not to help us. It was really challenging but we did a great job. We have had a great book week, heard from many other teachers and we are very happy.

ART

This week we made ‘International Women's Day’ cards with all year groups, celebrating this day across the globe on the March 8th. Children loved creating these cards for the special women in their lives, moms, sisters, friends and teachers. Children used different mediums such as construction paper, coloured paper, markers, paints and pencils for their cards. They were very excited and proud about the cards they made.

PE

Students in this week worked together with partners and groups. They developed their co-ordination and reaction skills during exercises with stick. Children enjoyed the balance challenge. Also primary students developed their loco-motor skills such as skipping, jumping and running .As well children showed great team work.

FRENCH

In Year 6, we still spoke about My House. We cut the name of each room and we had to stick them on the correct place. Then, we answered the questions about a description. To practice the writing, we wrote the name of each room, we searched the words in a Word Search. Finally and to finish the topic about “My House”, we listened to a song : J’ai une maison pleine de fenêtres. We had to listen to the song and fill the lyrics with the good words https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IbISxoeshK

Kids in Year 3 had the opportunity to be familiar with French books and to take some of them at home. Please don’t forget to bring them back next week.

In Year 5 and in Year 4, we studied the Prepositions of Place. How to say in French “on”, “in front of” “next to “ etc… They had a list of vocabulary in French and had to find the translation in English in dictionaries. After that, according to the picture, they had to write the good proposition under each picture.
