YEAR 3

In English this week, we have been continuing our hard work on our phonics and grammar. Students have been focusing on different types of fronted adverbials and can create sentences independently. We have also been looking at the features of biographies, analysing what is important in this type of text, before creating our own about a famous inventor for Topic.

In Maths, we have focused our learning on shape and angles. Students have been learning three basic types of angles – acute, obtuse and right angles – in the context of 2D shapes and real life examples. Some students have been looking at the use of angles in famous works of art like Kandinsky’s Composition 8.

In Science we have begun to plan our shadow puppet presentation, where students will present a puppet show to a younger grade explaining about how lights and shadows change.

In PSHE, we have been continuing our unit on right and responsibilities, by looking at some rights we all have. The students engaged in a debate about why it is morally correct that humans all have the right to an education.

YEAR 4

Welcome to our Week 4 newsletter. Year 4 have continued to work hard this week.

In English we have been learning about different language techniques that can be used to write an interesting Headline and introductory paragraph for an informative report. Our grammar focus for this week has been how to organise information into paragraphs.

In Math, we have been learning how to identify lines of symmetry in different 2D shapes. We have also practiced using small mirrors to draw the missing half of 2D shape symmetrical patterns. Towards the end of the week, we studied how to round decimals up and down and place them on a number line.

In Science we have continued our unit about ‘The Digestive System and Nutrition’. We learnt about balanced diets and organising different foods into the various food groups. We discussed how having a balanced diet helps to keep our organs healthy.

YEAR 5

Year 5 have had another fantastic week of learning with near enough full attendance from everyone all week. In English we have been really honing our observation and inference skills using both visual sources and written text. We have then applied this to images of war-torn Beirut. I have been delighted with how everyone has applied themselves in these activities because it has been quite challenging and really forced the grey cells to work harder than normal!

Speaking of working harder than normal, we have been learning to identify different triangles through their properties as well as calculating missing angles which has challenged us to learn new facts and increase our mental maths strategies and abilities further. In Science we reviewed and recorded our results from last week’s investigation where we dissolved coffee granules at various different temperatures. This week the children worked within the same groups but observed the changes to sugar again recording their own results and being responsible for collecting the appropriate equipment.

Last week’s Topic lesson involved a whole class ‘tribute’ to the composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky where the children played part of The Sugar Plum Fairy using electronic pianos on their devices whilst the majority of the class performed a very rudimentary ballet following Sojung’s instruction. They loved it and worked very well together.

Speaking of which, Ms Anna sang their praises last week for excellent listening and participation throughout her PE lesson. I have accompanied Year 5 to PE this week and I too have been really impressed with how everyone works together, supporting each other and ensuring that everyone takes part in this lesson. Keep up the fantastic work Year 5!

YEAR 6

We have been very busy here in Year 6 this week. It has been a lot of work learning about polygons and figuring out all of the missing angles. We have been making really great poems in Poetry and some fun ones about teachers! Mr. Marsh also taught us a sneaky lesson in ICT showing us the importance of thinking critically and learning to question things, rather than just believe everything we see on the internet. Even though we have been working hard we still had a lot of fun!!

ART

In year 5 children did a great job, when they designed their own version of a St. Basil style cathedral. They included: onion domes at the top of each building, various height structures, and many different patterns and colours. The finished projects look beautiful!

Year 6 made an interesting project where they compared doctors to superheroes. During the lesson we shared some ideas and opinions. Then some examples showing a group of superheroes welcoming a doctor were displayed. Children were then asked to draw their own version of a superhero welcoming a doctor.

With Year 4 this week we have been studying Salvador Dali. We discussed his surrealistic artworks. The students drew regular sized elephants on extremely long spindly legs, completely disproportionate to its size. This depicted the style of Salvador Dali.

RUSSIAN

This week Y3, 4 and Y5 children learned a lot of amazing facts about the life of Leo Tolstoy. We read the stories by roles, after that we discussed the plot, the actions of the heroes and the moral of the story. The children suggested how the stories could end if the heroes were not lucky or how they would act under different circumstances. Year 6 worked on the project about one of the famous monument or sculpture in their country. Students will be presenting their projects to classmates next week. I’m sure, It will be a great lesson!

FRENCH

In primary, we finally finished the topic about My family. I would like to thank all the parents who brought pictures. Students were proud and very happy to show pictures of their family.

To study the topic about My family, we first listened to a very funy song from Alain le Lait. If you want to listen to the song at home, here you can find the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MFk9YmJv-jc%2C

After that, we worked in pairs and each group had to write a list about a family member. We translated together and we wrote the name with an article about the family member. Then we did crosswords and a word search. It's a very good exercise to spell and write the word correctly.

Finally, each student had to cut and stick the pictures of his family. For this activity, they were free to do their genealogic tree like they wanted. Some of them drew a very good tree and realized a really good patchwork. Good job Primary!

MUSIC

Year 3 and Year 4 have been learning about Vivaldi. The students have explored the music of Vivaldi and the musical instruments he had played.Year 5 have played simple tune on the keyboards and performed it in class.
