YEAR 3

How heavy is 50 grams? How heavy is a kilogram? This week students in year 3 held gram and kilogram weights in their hands to gain a better understanding what is meant by these units of measurement. This information was further reinforced with an activity that had student’s weigh themselves, write this data on the white- board, and then organize this information onto bar graph’s; another great example of hands on, meaningful learning in the classrooms of EIS.

Year 3 also took advantage of the excellent weather conditions outside this week, and were able to work with a partner or group to learn more about rainforests; where in the world are our rainforests found? Tropical rainforests, we learned, are near the Equator! How many layers are found in the rainforest? Four! What are they called? Just ask the students in Year 3!

YEAR 4

This week Year 4 have been preparing for and partaking in our half-termly end of unit assessments.

In English, we carried on reading ‘The Iron Man’ book. We explored how tension changes throughout chapter three and reasons why this happens. We also read chapter 4 and identified the language in the text that inspires imagination.

In Math, we have been focusing on fractions and decimals. We have learnt how to find equivalent fractions by multiplying and dividing and write fractions in words, as decimals, and vice versa. We have also studied how to calculate the shaded fractions of 100 squares.

In Topic this week, we continued our ‘River and water unit’. We learnt all about the water cycle.

YEAR 5

Year 5 have had a lovely week of learning, playing helpfully and supportively together outside whilst enjoying the abundant rays of sunshine.

At the beginning of the week, we reviewed our basic arithmetic and then tested ourselves informally which was interesting and fun. In English we completed our group research into some of the least unexplored parts of the world and wrote our own report to the Director (myself) giving reasons why we should explore these areas. I was delighted with everyone’s effort and focus with their writing and there have been quite a number of strong persuasive arguments for me to consider which makes me very happy.

In Science, we rounded off our unit of work by making some final investigations into the life cycles of spiders and compared this to the life cycle of a farm mammal both of which can be found in our class reader, ‘Charlotte’s Web’.

Our Topic work from last Friday was linked to New Zealand which helped us to explore and enjoy learning about this country all the more. The children worked in groups to research the fjordlands of the South Island and presented their work beautifully in the form of Powerpoint presentations which were uploaded on the Padlet wall for International Day. We thoroughly enjoyed learning about the Haka, attempting to learn and memorise the words as well as the actions. It was a fun and cathartic experience for all.

YEAR 6

We have been extremely busy this week in Year 6! We have been busy doing all of our assessments in class and doing our international assessments as well. We have done very well in our exams, and we are all very proud of what we have achieved this year! We have also been preparing for the upcoming musical, and in Art we began to help paint the backdrops for our play. We had our 1st full group rehearsal on Friday, and it was a lot of fun, we still have a lot of work to do but we are excited to showcase our great singing and acting abilities. All in all it was a very busy but very satisfying week.

MUSIC

Such a wonderful week we had at school in our music lessons. In Primary, we practiced singing in harmony with three groups in the ‘If We All Work Together” song. The students worked hard about a dance for the musical. We repeated it with the lines and how to pronounce them in different scenes. That was a great job. We all excited about rehearsal next week.

ART

Year 3 continued with their Rainforest topic so this week we chose a tropical frog for drawing. The rainforest frog is a colorful and extremely cute little creature that lives, as its name suggests, in the rainforest.

Claude Monet was 68 years old when he fell in love with Venice. He stayed 2 months and painted 37 paintings, but he never finished the last painting he started there. This week Year 4 finished to draw a scene of a gondola on the Grand Canal.

Year 5 were drawing a Japanese mountain landscape scene in a famous ukiyo-e- Japanese art style. Ukiyo-e is a genre of Japanese art which flourished from the 17th through 19th centuries. The subjects of this style were: kabuki actors and sumo wrestlers; scenes from history and folk tales; travel scenes and landscapes; and flora and fauna. One of the famous paintings in this style is: The Great Wave off Kanagawa, also known as The Great Wave or simply The Wave, is a woodblock print by the Japanese ukiyo-e artist Hokusai.

With Year 6 this week we were preparing decorations for their play.

FRENCH

In Year 3, we were still speaking about the Little Red Riding hood. They listened again the story and they repeat the sentences to understand each important moment of the story. We wrote properly the name of each characters and how to pronounce them.
In Year 4, we started a new topic : clothing. We cut differents clothes and we glued them on a paper mannequin. We first did that with woman clothes, then we did the same with man clothes. it's was a very good way to help them remember the vocabulary. After that, we wrote the translation next to each word.
In Year 5 we saw the different type of transport : une voiture, un bus, un train, un avion, etc. We learnt how to pronounce the words and how to write them properly. We also learnt how to use the prepositon "en" and "à" with the verb Aller. Now we know that we need to use the preposition "en" when we are inside a transport, per example : "je vais en voiture", and we should use the preposition "à" for the others and when we are outside, like "je vais à pied".
In Year 6, we studied the song "Voyage Voyage " from the band Desireless. We had to write the missing lyrics and to translate the words. It was a good exercice. Indeed we had to listen very carefully the lyrics and to follow the rhythm of the song, If you want to listen to this song at home, here is the link : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6PDmZnG8KsM

This week we have continued our Pionerball/Volleyball topic. We have developed basic skills such as “throwing”, ”catching”, ”positions” ,”rules” and “gameplay”. During lesson children passed the ball use overarm pass, underarm. Also, we have started learned how to smash the ball. Keep it up!
