YEAR 3
Everyone has come back refreshed and ready to the start the new term this week. In English we have reflected on our break and independently written about our Christmas break, we followed this up with our various new phonics focus and completing our autobiographies. In Maths, we recapped place value of three-digit numbers and identifying the different operations in word problems. Science we introduced new unit of Light and Shadows and worked in groups to try to explain why shadows get bigger the further an item is away from a light source. In Topic, we have reflected on what makes a good invention and planned our own.
YEAR 4
Year 4 have settled well back into school after the Christmas holidays. They are beginning to refamiliarise themselves with school routines and teacher expectations.
In English we have been writing a recount about the different things we did during the Christmas holidays. We have focused on past tense verbs and general English grammatical and structural constructs.
In Math, we have been learning how to round 4-digit numbers to the nearest 1000, 100 and 10 and place them on a number line. We have also been learning how to multiply 3-digit numbers by 1-digit numbers using the ladder method and revising how to add and subtract 4-digit numbers using the column method.
In Science we have started our new unit on the ‘Human body and the digestive system’. We have gained a greater understanding the tricky vocabulary and learnt about the basic functions of the body’s organs in the human digestion process. We have also located where we would find the digestive organs inside our body.
YEAR 5
Year 5 have had a very relaxed and calm start to the new year and have just slotted back into the usual routine of school life which has been fantastic. We have returned to our learning at full throttle (maybe a little too full) by reviewing, finishing off and beginning new units of work.
In Maths we have been revisiting place value and working with large numbers with up to 7 digits for some children. In English we have been using a non-fictional text to learn about animals which migrate and have been identifying the differences between facts and opinions. We have been able to extend this into our Science too where we worked in small groups to design an efficient hull for a boat, helping to finish off our unit of work on Forces.
In Topic we will be learning about Russia and famous Russians and we will have already begun this fascinating study earlier today.
All in all it has been a positive week with some new additions to our class who we hope will be very happy to continue learning with us.
YEAR 6
This week we have been very busy in Year 6. We are all well rested after the holiday and were eager to get back into school. It has been very busy learning how to do research projects, we have a big one in Topic coming up soon. We have also been working hard on learning how to apply our math knowledge to real world problems. Mr. Marsh also challenged us to learn how to create solutions to real world problems, which has been very tricky to do. It has been a great week, we are all happy to be back and we have had fun trying to cover Mr. Marsh in the snow.
ART
Year 3 were drawing a surrealist bulb inspired by S. Dali this week. Children produced a project drawing of their own surreal world inside a light bulb. They thought of a dream or event that they had and drew it on paper. They used mixed media to create their work.
Year 5 expanded their knowledge about the types of folk arts and crafts and certain methods, principles and techniques of work. They read an article about Gorodets painting and started to decorate a wooden panel with this technique.
With year 6 we discussed the human brain and interesting facts about it. Then children made a watercolour human brain project. Kids drew and painted half of a real brain and another half with flowers.
FRENCH
This week, we studied the calendar in French. First, we learnt the days-off in France and what we celebrate on this day. Then, we studied how to say the days of the week, the months and the seasons.
