YEAR 1

In English we have been reading a story called The Way Back Home about a boy and a martian who get stuck on the moon and have to fix their plane and spaceship to be able to get home. We thought about how would the boy might feel being stuck on the moon and why. We drew story maps to retell the story and then we used our pictures to tell the story to our friend. Then we used our story map to write sentences to tell the story. Some of us did a fantastic job at writing all by ourselves!

In Maths this week we have been using our knowledge of counting in 2s, 5s and 10s to group objects into lots and then count them. We have counted lots of socks, stars and 10p coins. We have also continued to practise our adding and subtracting skills. Some of used a number line to help but many of us can now solve these problems mentally.

In Science we have described the properties of materials. We looked at and touched different objects before deciding how to describe them using words such as stretchy, bumpy, rough and shiny. Then we took part in an investigation to see which materials float and which sink. Before we started, we predicted which objects we thought would sink and which would float. We then put the different objects into water and observed whether they floated or sank before recording our results.

In Topic, we looked at the last and smallest continent of Australia/Oceania. We are now learning to name the oceans and started by looking at the biggest ocean, the Pacific. We were interested to know that there are a ring of volcanoes around the Pacific Ocean and that the deepest place on Earth can be found in this ocean.

YEAR 2

Well, that is the first week of the new summer term complete! It was fantastic to see the children enjoying the beautiful weather. For instance, in PSHE we looked at the power of vitamin D and exercise: how those things can defeat viruses, improve our mood, build stronger and healthier bodies, as well as improve our brain function. The best things in life are free.

In Science, we also took advantage of the great weather as we ventured outside of the school for the first time this academic year! As part of our new unit (Growing Plants) we decided to investigate and observe the beginnings of spring in a local park. The idea is to return in 6 weeks, as the unit ends, and to compare the scenery. There is a lot of interesting buds and plants beginning to blossom. We also spotted birds nesting – there is life all around us!

In Topic, our new unit is Weather & Climate, which fitted in brilliantly for the week. First, we learnt about the difference between the two and then we looked at the various weather types that meteorologists would highlight. The children became weather presenters and matched the relevant weather symbols to the right labels.

In English, we spent the week completing assessments and finishing our traditional tales. Some children wrote more than a full page for the latter, which is a testament to their huge writing progress this year. In Maths, we finished looking at numbers and number lines of numbers up to 100 and beyond. The children enjoyed finding the halfway numbers between pairs; even, having to break things down into fractions.

Amazing, Year 2, well done!

MUSIC

Years 1 and 2 have started a new unit called Water. The students have been learning a new song ‘Slippery fish, sliding through the water’. Pupils found it very funny and easily learned the lyrics of this song. The students have learned simple accompaniment for this song and practiced on the keyboards and xylophones. We played a new music circle game ‘Don’t clap this one back’. This game helps students to work on concentration and creates different rhythms by themselves. Everybody likes to be the leader in this game.

PE

This week we have developed our logic skills. Children showed great abilities in the "Tic tac toe" game. They showed great running skills and reaction to the attack during this game. Also, students enjoyed and demonstrated fantastic skills in "Mats" game.

ART

With Year 1 children we learned about Christopher Columbus who sailed with his crew on three large ships: the Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria. Then they made a ship craft to replica one of the famous ships that sailed the ocean blue.

With Year 2 we talked about climate, weather and pollution. Children shared their ideas how to keep our planet clean. Children discussed how it is important to save our Planet. Then we drew posters about it.
