YEAR 1

This week in Year 1, we have been reading a story set in Kenya called Bringing the Rain to Kapiti Plain. It is all about a boy who shoots a rain cloud to bring rain to the very dry African Plains. First, we predicted how Ki-Pat would use the feather to change the weather. Then we drew the African Plains and wrote what we could find there. Finally, we thought about how Ki-Pat might feel at different points during the story.

In Maths, we have been learning how to identify odd and even numbers by looking at the last digit. We have also been doubling numbers to 10.

In Science, we have been identifying the four seasons and the months associated with each season. We have also been learning what the weather is like in spring.

In Topic, we have looked at Planet Earth and spoken about why we think it is special – because it is home to humans and animals, because it has many amazing features such as beaches, deserts, rivers and mountains.

YEAR 2

Only a 4-day week but a very busy and productive one for Year 2!

In Maths, we have revised and practiced our multiplications – 2s, 5s, 10s and sometimes 3s. We looked at arrays to show us how multiplications are cumulative. In English, we have looked in more detail at coordinating conjunctions such as ‘and, ‘so, ‘but’ and ‘or’. We know how to make our sentences very interesting!

In Topic, we started our War & Remembrance unit by looking at life in the trenches. It was not pretty! The children understood the terrible nature of living in such conditions, for example, trench-foot, rats, lice, the cold and wind, and of course, mud. Year 2 wrote passages and drew great pictures representing the whole affair.

Science was fun and productive, with Year 2 conducting experiments about stretchy materials. As true scientists, we measured the length of items and then stretched them to make sure we recorded the length of the stretch itself. We recorded our findings scientifically and drew diagrams representing our experiments. Some of the items stretched over two metres!

Great week, well done.

MUSIC

Year 1 and Year 2 are exploring Pitch shapes in music. We have been learning about High and Low Sounds. The students were perfect in performing sounds with different pitch. The song ‘Springtime warms up’ helped us to explore pitch shapes. We have been practicing ‘Hot cross buns’ song on the keyboards and on the xylophones.
