YEAR 1
This week we have been learning what we write in a diary. We know that we write about what we did and we use the past tense. We started by writing about what we did at the weekend. We wrote questions in the past tense that we could ask about a diary and we answered questions about a picture diary, again writing in the past tense. Finally, we drew our own imaginative picture diaries, some of us visited the Queen! Then we wrote sentences about our picture diary.
In Maths we have been looked at how to find half of a number by either sharing or by drawing a line through the middle of an object of objects. We then revised identifying a quarter of shapes. We learned about the different coins found in the UK and we also looked at some Russian rubles. We learned how to make amounts using different coins and finally we counted in 2s, 5s and 10s using coins.
In Science we have started our topic of Plants. First we thought about what a plant is and we looked at different types of seeds. We planted our own seeds and we hope that in a few weeks, they will grow into lovely blue flowers. Then we thought about edible plants and whether they come from the flower, root, stem or leaf of the plant. We planted some cress seeds and hope that in a few days we will have grown our own edible plants.
In Topic, we have looked at Yuri Gagarin, the first man in space. We also spoke about Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman in space. We really want to find out about the first dog in space, Laika! Then we looked at Neil Armstrong, who was the first man on the moon. We drew pictures of him on the moon and wrote what we know.
YEAR 2
This week saw Year 2 complete their penultimate English, Maths and Science assessments. They’ve all managed to keep up their high standards on the whole, so a well done from me. It’s great to see amazing progress and it’s always satisfying to look back at the work from the first few weeks. What a difference!
We did manage to get outside a lot more this week and capture that all important vitamin D, whether it was for handwriting or to see the feeding chicks in our birdboxes. I reckon we have about ten birds’ nests on our grounds from sparrows to starlings, all with feeding chicks. Great to see. Especially for Year 2; it nicely reminds our pupils about life cycles, habitats and changes over time.
In Topic, we looked at deserts and their unique inhabitants. The children researched independently using their built-up comprehension knowledge and recounted fascinating facts about animals such as camels, eagles, scorpions, lizards, snakes, spiders and tortoise.
A very productive week, well done!
MUSIC
Years 1 and 2 worked hard this week. We learned about various percussion instruments. The students learned their names and practiced playing them. We started with the time unit of the story and talked about the ballet "The Nutcracker". Students listened to various passages and discussed what they hear in the music.
ART
Year 1 and 2 studied a great activity about food choices. The best time to instill good dental health care like prevention, good food choices, and dental hygiene habits is in childhood. To help establish these habits, we made a dental health art project that covers: foods that are good for our teeth and foods that are bad for our teeth. This activity helps young thinkers choose good foods for their teeth. We talked about how we use our teeth and how we take care of them.
RUSSIAN
This week EYFS kids focused on the letter Д. Children learnt how to identify hard consonant Д and soft Д' and their symbolic representation. Children also practised their writing and reading skills with great enthusiasm and learned a lot of words that begin with this consonant. Well done, Daniel, Boris and Victor!
