YEAR 1

This week we have been reading a story called The King who Banned the Dark in Year 1. The king banned the dark because he was scared of it! We wrote lists of things we would ban if we were a King or a Queen and we used adjectives to describe the dark. We also thought about what the King could have done instead of banning the dark.

In Maths, we have been revising the number bonds that make 5, 6, 7 and 10. We have been using these facts to help us solve addition and subtraction problems. Some of us can write all the addition and subtraction facts for a number family. We have also listened to and solved word problems and some of us made up our own word problems. Finally, we learned the pairs of numbers that make 8.

In Science we have identified objects made from different materials and we have started to describe the properties of materials. We thought of materials that were hard, soft, rough, smooth, bendy and rigid.

In Topic this week we have been talking about castles. We have learned about three different castle types that were common in the United Kingdom – the motte and bailey castle, the stone keep castle and the concentric castle. We decided that the concentric castle would be the safest to live in! We also learned who lived in castles and the jobs they did.

YEAR 2

Another interesting and cold week for Year 2 this week!

In Science, we have looked at various materials and determined whether they would be fit for purpose. Would you wear glass slippers (sounds like a fairy tale!)? How about brick glasses? I know…a mud hat! We also looked at how many objects are from different materials but which are suitable for their requirements.

For Topic, as part of our unit: ‘Important People in History’, we learnt about Florence Nightingale. Year 2 learnt how this brave and caring woman transformed 19th century practice and created modern nursing. We wrote a cloze passage and created pictures depicting the scenes and her actions.

Our English lessons have focused on more advanced words that include the ‘ou’ and ‘ow’ digraphs. We also tackled some comprehension activities and expanded our adjective knowledge (some used a thesaurus).

In Maths, perfected our bonds to 10 knowledge as well as to 20 – some moved onto 50, 100 and even 100,000,000! We applied the same principles to complete addition/subtraction number sentences to 100 and more.

It has been a productive week. Well done, Year 2!

RUSSIAN NATIVE

In Russian Y1 focused on the letter Г. Children learnt how to identify hard consonant Г and soft Г' and their symbolic representation. Children also practised their writing and reading skills with great enthusiasm and learned a lot of words that begin with this consonant. Well done, Year 1!

MUSIC

Year 1 and 2 have danced "Rainy Rap" . Children were very happy about the music and movements. We have been learning "Weather" topic and children have played on the Xylophone weather effects.
