YEAR 1

This week in Year 1, we have been learning about bossy verbs to give cmmands. We thought of bossy words, we have read them and given each other bossy commands to follow – our favourites were, ‘Go to sleep’ and ‘Quack like a duck’! Finally, we sequenced some sentences about how to wash our hands.

In Maths, we have been finding 1 more and less and 2 more and less than numbers using a number square to help us. We have looked carefully at the number square and put pieces of it together like a puzzle. We have also found and identified numbers on the number square.

In Science we have started a new unit on identifying materials. We have identified some common materials such as wood, plastic, metal and glass and identified objects made from these materials.

In Topic this term, we are looking at the topic of Kings and Queens. This week we have identified the four countries that make up the United Kingdom and learned that the UK has been ruled by Kings and Queens for many years. We leamed what happens during the coronation of a king or queen.

YEAR 2

Happy New Year and welcome back to Year 2 and anyone reading this! All the best for 2021!

In Science, we have started a new unit: ‘Use of Materials’, and investigated the uses of various materials inside and outside our classroom. We discovered different materials, how some are for the same purpose and objects.

For Topic, we have also started a new unit: ‘Important People in History’. This week we learnt about Yuri Gagarin, how the Russian cosmonaut was the first man in space. We wrote a cloze passage and created a labelled diagram of his spacecraft, Vostok 1.

Our English lessons continue in earnest as we learn about expanded noun phrases and include them in our own sentences. We also tackled some comprehension activities and looked at the ‘ai’, ‘ay’ and ‘a_e’ sounds/spellings.

In Maths, we are looking at clever ways to add 11 and 9 – we used our knowledge of adding 10 to increase speed and proficiency. We applied the same principles to subtraction. Year 2 have enjoyed using die to beat Mr Daglish in place value games!

Well done, people!
