YEAR 1

This week we have been reading a recount called ‘Cloud Nine’ about a girl’s birthday trip to a theme park. We understand that recounts tell us about something that has happened, it is written in the past tense and in time order. We answered questions about Cloud Nine and sequenced pictures about the recount and wrote sentences to go with each. We have used pictures to write a recount about a bouncy castle and some of us even wrote our own recount about a missing animal, remembering to use first, next, then and finally. We have also looked at how we can add the prefix ‘un’ to words to make them mean the opposite.

In Maths we revised how identify odd and even numbers. We have identified all the multiples of 2, 5 and 10 on the number square and recognized that we say the multiples of 10 when we count in 2s and 5s as well. We have been to learn what the ‘x’ sign means and used it to solve problems in 2s, 5s and 10s. We have also revised how we find doubles of numbers to 10 and their related halves and some of us have even found out have to halve odd numbers.

In Science we have named the parts of the plant and identified what each plant part does. We have also considered the things that plants need to be healthy – sunlight, water and the right temperature, and what things, such as too much or not enough water, are not good for plants.

In Topic, we have started our new topic of the Olympics. This week we have introduced what the Olympic Games are and thought about some of the sporting events that form part of the Games. We have also compared the Ancient Olympics to the Modern Olympics. We decided that the Modern Olympics sound better!

YEAR 2

This week has been action-packed as usual, especially in our Topic lesson on the famous female gymnast, Olga Korbut. We learnt how the young athlete changed the face of female gymnastics with perfect scores, signature moves and many medals. We tried our own gymnastic moves to appreciate the difficulty and achievements of Korbut and her peers who compete at this level.

In Science, we looked at want human beings need, as opposed to what they want. Oxygen, water, food, shelter, warmth, sleep etc. are all needs, whereas toys, iPads and candy are wants.

For English, we began writing our very own non-fiction books. We are splitting the books into chapters based on our previous lessons’ mind maps. Some children have included contents pages and captions. All the children researched independently to find out the information for their books. I look forward to reading the finished products.

In Maths, we cemented our knowledge of multiplication and division, using inverse operations to check and work out the answers. We worked at increasing our mulplication fluency and speed with timed battles in pairs, as well as interactive challenges on the SmartBoard.

We also got to enjoy watching the school musical, which was absolutely amazing. Well done, guys! In addition, we walked up to the park again to compare how the trees and other plants have grown since our initial visit right at the beginning of spring.

Keep up the progress, Year 2!
