YEAR 1

This week we have been thinking about how we stay fit and healthy. We read a recount about how two children stay healthy and then we asked our friends what they do to stay health. We also wrote about how we stay healthy using ‘because’ and ‘so’ to make our sentences longer and more detailed. Finally, we looked at when we use the pronouns ‘I’ and ‘we’.

In Maths we revised how to add and subtract 10. We have been comparing and ordering numbers from smallest to biggest and identifying numbers that come between two numbers. We have also been partitioning numbers into 10s and 1s.

In Science we have learned about garden plants and wild plants. We looked at different plants that can be found in the garden such as roses and tulips. Many of us particularly liked the weeping willow tree! We drew and labelled our own gardens. Then we looked at wild plants such as poppies, daisies and buttercups. We also spoke about some not so nice wild plants such as nettles and thistles. The cress seeds we planted last week have sprouted and we now have some cress to take home and eat in a salad!

In Topic, we have been talking about animals that were sent into space. We thought the story of Laika was sad but we found it interesting that many other animals like monkeys, cats and tortoises have survived trips into space. Finally, to end our topic, we planned our own explorations. Some of us wanted to explore space and the sun, whilst some of us wanted to go to China, the Maldives and the Arctic Ocean!

YEAR 2

So, we end one unit cycle then begin another, very much like the life cycles we learnt about in Science this year. To finish off our Science unit (Growing Plants), we accompanied Year 3 to the Botanical Garden at Prospect Mira. What a wonderful day it was!

We had an excellent English-speaking tour guide called Daniel who took us around the ponds, gardens and green house. Not only did we see a vast array of plants but we also got to see some great animal life such as fish, ducks and ducklings, turtles, snakes and even lizards. The children also got to play in the outdoor park as well as have lunch outside, surrounded by beautiful scenery.

We also completed our GL assessments, which take place annually, for Maths and English this week. For English lessons, we learnt about using commas in a list and we also started mind-mapping for our non-fiction books. For Maths, we focused heavily on subtraction and also currency using decimal points, i.e. pounds and pence.

In Topic, we started our new unit: Sporting Greats. This week featured Lionel Messi, perhaps the greatest footballer to ever live. After we learnt about his achievements and watched highlight reels, we went outdoors and played football. This allowed the children to gain an experiential understanding of just how much skill is needed to play football in such a way.

A thoroughly enjoyable week. Well done, Year 2!

ART

The Olympics always bring plenty of fun and excitement for families who enjoy watching their favorite athletes and teams compete. Crafts and activities related to the events can make the games even more fun and educational for children. This week with year 1 and 2 we were making an Olympic ski craft. Children used different media to create a ski jumper and then drew Olympic rings.

MUSIC

Years 1 and 2 worked hard this week. We investigated the Storytime block. The students listened to " Night on the Bare Mountain” and discussed the mood of the music and what musical instruments do it. We sang the song “Spooky Spinney" and practiced with different sound effects that help us make different creepy sounds.
