YEAR 1

In Year, this week we have been reading another knight and dragon story called ‘The Knight and the Dragon’. The story is about a knight and a dragon who are not very good at fighting each other so instead they use their skills to open a barbecue business together! We have used pictures to retell the story and we have written sentences about the story. Most of us now remember to start our sentence with a capital letter and end it with a full stop without being reminded! We have also completed a book review saying what our favourite part of the story was. Finally we have compared the two knights stories and said what was the same and what was different about them.

In Maths, we have been learning the days of the week and the months of the year. We have also been learning to name some common 3D shapes and finding 3D shapes around us.

In Science we have learned about the terms ‘natural’ and ‘man-made’. We have sorted different materials into natural and man-made.

This week in Topic, we have looked at the location of castles in the UK and why they were built where they were. Finally, we started to look at William the Conqueror, a Norman who invaded England and eventually became King in 1066.

YEAR 2

Wow, what a week! It’s been very practical and exciting, that’s for sure.

In English, we have further developed our knowledge and navigational skills using dictionaries. As a result, we have furthered our vocabulary and improved our spelling. We have also completed comprehension on the Wright Brothers. Some of our children were coming up with 10-letter words quite easily.

In Maths, we have progressed from 2D to 3D shapes, understanding that the former can create the latter. We know the number of faces, vertices and edges of square-based pyramids, cones, cylinders, cuboids, cubes and spheres.

The Wright Brothers invented the first aeroplane and would go onto improving and updating subsequent designs, effectively transforming the world as we know it. We learnt all about them in Topic – we wrote passages, depicted the Wright Flyer II and even made our own paper planes.

Finally, in Science, we conducted experiments on the strength of certain materials – cloth, paper, plastic and wood. We recorded our results scientifically using Newton Bars. We discussed how external influences could impact the results, for example, water.

Well done for an excellent week!

ART

In Year 1 this week we had a discussion on kings and queens: The children were asked who they wanted to be the king or queen of: The children had to choose something they enjoy and are truly good at and think about their talents. Then they were asked to draw a self-portrait showing their particular talent.

Year 2 students made a 3d paper airplane this week. This was inspired by the Wright brothers, whom they have been studying during their topic lessons. Children were very excited about their airplanes and had a lot of different ideas and their own designs.
