YEAR 1

This week in English we have been reading the story ‘Lost and Found’ about a boy who finds a penguin and helps him get back to the South Pole before realising that the penguin just wanted a friend. Before reading the story, we thought about why the penguin might have gone to the boy’s house. We thought about the journey he made to get to the boy’s house, starting from Antarctica and crossing the Southern Ocean and we thought about things he might have seen on his journey. Then we thought about the things the boy and the penguin might have taken on the rowing bow to go back to the South Pole and why these items would be useful. Finally, we have been joining two sentences together using ‘and’.

In Maths, we have been learning how to find half and quarter of a shape and then a quantity. We did this by imagining we had to share slices of tomato on a pizza!

In Science, we have learned how to stay safe in the sun by covering our skin, wearing sunscreen and playing in the shade, as well as wearing sunglasses and a sun hat. We also know why we should never look directly at the sun. We have been describing the weather in autumn.

In Topic, we have learned to locate the continents of North and South America. We have also found out what is special about each of these continents.

YEAR 2

Our penultimate week of the spring term at EIS SW saw a nice change in weather, as well Year 2 doing some fun lessons.

In Topic, we focused on animals in World War One: we learnt about Sergeant Stubby the bulldog who could detect gas attacks, warn of approaching enemies, help the wounded and deliver messages and Cher Ami, the pigeon who saved 200 lives by delivering 12 important messages in 1917. We also looked at the roles of horses and, even, elephants.

In Science, our attention was on squashing and twisting materials. We saw what happens if you squash a pencil too hard, twist string to make it stronger and use both manipulation methods on balloons. They were fun lessons!

In English, we created our traditional story characters and morals/messages of our stories. We also planned our openings, build-ups, dilemmas, resolutions and closings. Year 2 added illustrations to their storyboards, which will prove useful when using expanded noun phrases in our writing.

In Maths, we tied up our work on currency, primarily British coins and notes. We found out very quickly the importance of decimal points!

An excellent week, Year 2, well done.

ART

Y1 made their own sets of Matreshka dolls out of paper that helped them to introduce children to Russian folk art. Children decorated their templates in their own design and coloured them with pencils and markers.

Year 2 continued on their topic from last week about War and Remembrance and drew a World War soldier in a uniform of those times. Children drew an outline first and coloured it with coloured pencils then. They were very excited about it, especially boys!

MUSIC

Year 1 and 2 started with the Our school Unit. We have researched and identify the source of sounds we hear as we listen the Mister Map Classroom song. The students watched the Kitchen taps movie and explored how they can play music with a simple kitchen stuff.
