Nursery and Reception
For the first two days of this week Nursery and Reception enjoyed many lessons online.
Handa’s Hen by Eileen Browne was our chosen book for ‘Book Week’. This is a fun and enjoyable read.
Handa is a young girl from the Luo tribe in Kenya. She feeds her grandmothers black hen named Mondi every morning. One morning, Handa can’t find Mondi. She sets off with her friend Akeyo to go look for Mondi. On their journey they come across two fluttery butterflies, three stripy mice, four little lizards, five beautiful sunbirds, and many more intriguing creatures. They eventually find Mondi who has a little surprise for them…
We applied this story to many areas of our curriculum and made cross curricular links to Maths - number sequence, ordering and data display.
This book consists of vibrant colours which illustrate a sense of culture and atmosphere which linked to ‘Understanding the World’. We looked at a map of the world looking at the continent of Africa. We were able to get a feeling of where Kenya is in relation to Russia. We looked briefly at the customs and the beautiful colours found in the fabrics in Africa.
Handa’s exciting and adventurous journey was also displayed in our area of ‘Expressive Arts and Design’. Take a while to look at some of our beautiful art showcased this week.
