NURSERY

Nursery continue to travel on their magical trip through the land of ‘Fairy tales”

This week we have read the story of ‘The Enormous Turnip’. The children loved discussing the different characters. This story enabled us to look at many important life lessons. If we all pull together (in the same direction), we can get things done, which we would not be able to do individually.

Yes, it is about the value of teamwork and synergy. We were able to discuss how even the cat and the dog were important members of the team.

However, the smallest of them all, the mouse was needed to finally pull out the enormous turnip.

A valuable lesson being, everyone is important no matter how small.

Many activities were enjoyed by the children according to the ‘Enormous Turnip’ story.

These included practical activities to explain the difference between pushing and pulling. Cutting out and ordering according to size, smallest to biggest. Sequencing the story pictures while verbally recounting some of the details of the story.

The children each chose a character from the story to contribute to our wonderful storyboard display. They carefully painted their chosen character using water colours.

We have been developing this technique of painting over the last few weeks. Painting with water colours allows children an educational opportunity that is fun and exciting. Children acquire hand-eye coordination, an important skill for their age. This is developed while they learn to paint the parts that they see; making sure their hand movement is on par with their vision.

Enjoy the pictures we painted for our story board.

RECEPTION

The Fairy Tale that we focused on this week was The Enormous Turnip. The children took great delight in retelling the story in the correct order. The activity that they enjoyed the most was acting out the story and playing the part of the different characters in the story. They just loved the ‘pulling actions’ while trying to get the turnip out of the ground! We finished up the painting of the Gingerbread Men and there was some serious concentration on those little faces as they were painting. We continue to learn new sounds which are reinforced by games. There are quite a few sight words that the children can already recognise and they are very enthusiastic to try to read all the words as they flash onto the screen. It was fabulous to see the fine motor control as they worked on writing patterns and number control and had to keep between the lines without touching them. I am so enjoying seeing the progress that is being made each week!
