NURSERY

As we approach the end of the school year an ocean theme can also be a natural way to lead into Summer. There’s so much to learn about the ocean.

We started the theme by exploring the depths of the ocean on a web cam tour. It felt like we were really swimming on the bottom of the ocean. The different colours and patterns we saw were amazing! We met many beautiful creatures living in the depths of the ocean. Our ocean vocabulary was extended as we learned new words like coral, sea anemone, clown fish, sword fish, star fish, sea horse, whale and dolphin. We sang along as we learned the words to the song ‘There’s a hole at the bottom of the sea’.

Nursery enjoyed playing in the tuff tray arranging the small world ocean creatures in sand and water as they engaged in imaginative play telling stories with their peers.

Under water activities included revising concepts of size, colour, shapes numbers and counting. We also had fun engaging in activities where we learned about position and d The children had so many questions and their curiosity will lead the way to future lessons as we explore the ‘Under Water” theme.

This week we learned to play bingo. The children had so much fun searching their bingo card for the correct sea creature that was called out. They became very competitive all wanting to fill their bingo card first so they could yell out BINGO!

We all had fun in the Russian class this week. We read the story of the ‘Little Red Hen’. We learned how to bake bread with Ms. Lena. The fun part was kneading the dough. We formed the dough into a loaf of bread and popped it in the oven. We could hardly wait until it was golden brown. In no time we were all enjoying a crunchy piece of warm bread, freshly baked by the Nursery bakers. Oh what a treat! Our mum definitely needs this recipe!

RECEPTION

This week Reception went Under the Sea! We created the most beautiful under the sea collages. We started by painting the water in different shades of blue using watercolours. Then we coloured in and cut out coral, fish, starfish, crabs, sharks, jellyfish to add to our collage. We are so proud of the masterpieces we have created!

We had fun doing Brain Breaks with an under the sea theme and sang some under the sea action songs. We thoroughly enjoyed playing Ocean Bingo and it was a hard lesson for some of us to learn that we cannot always win! We were fascinated by the Webcams, which showed us jellyfish and sharks moving about under the sea. We also learnt a lot about coral reefs.

We were working on recognizing, identifying and ordering numbers up to 20. Using sea creatures, we completed simple addition sums to 20. We reinforced our shape knowledge by identifying the different shapes we could find in the under the sea picture.
