NURSERY

Nursery celebrated Egypt as our chosen country for International Day.

Through pictures, stories and discussion we learned many new facts about Ancient Egypt.

The Egyptians were lucky as they lived along the River Nile. This meant that they could use the water to grow crops, to get food.

We had a go at stepping into the past and created our own pyramids. We worked together to solve the problem on how to build a pyramid.

Egyptians were great at coming up with things to heal the human body. They used mouldy bread to heal wounds quickly and to stop infection and a lot of the time, it worked! We put some bread in a dark cupboard for a few days and examined the mould. We decided that we would prefer not to try it!

The ancient Egyptians usually wore green and black make up. The green was made from copper and the black was lead! It protected their skin from the hot sun but they also believed it had healing powers too.

We read a book about the Egyptian measurement system. We learnt how to use our fingers to measure in digits, palms, spans and cubits. We went outside and measured our height using these measures.

On Friday, Nursery were able to showcase the beautiful, elaborate headgear, bracelets and emblazoned gold collars which they had each carefully fashioned.

Other art activities included Tutankhamen’s headdress, and camels which were used for our door display.

RECEPTION

International Week was celebrated in school this week. Reception’s chosen country was South Africa. We learnt about South Africa through pictures and discussion. We found out about the Big Five Animals; lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephants and cape buffalo.

We discussed famous South Africans like Nelson Mandela, favourite foods like biltong (seasoned beef which is hung up to dry, not cooked) and milk tart. We looked at beautiful Ndebele huts that are painted in bright colours and studied very intricate beadwork.

We found out that South Africa is called the Rainbow Nation because of all the different cultural, racial and ethnic people who live there. We also learnt that this flag is the only flag to have six colours in it: red, white, green, blue, yellow and black.

We painted pictures of wild animals, cut them out and made them into an animal collage. We made our own flamingos using handprints, feathers and pipe cleaners.

We dressed up as wild animals for our International Assembly and sang a song Ms. Katya had taught us during the week in music. We loved being invited to the Key Stage 2 Assembly to learn about the other countries our classes have been learning about.
