NURSERY

National Endangered Species Day is observed on the third Friday of May every year. This day is celebrated to highlight the increasing need to protect endangered species across the world.

A huge range of species are facing the threat of extinction; while some fall under the category of critically endangered and others have already been extinct.

On this day, thousands of people from across the world participate by celebrating, and taking action to protect threatened and endangered species. Special programs are held at wildlife refuges, zoos, aquariums, gardens, schools, libraries, museums, community groups.

Nursery decided to choose the giraffe as the animal they would like to protect.

We read the story ‘Giraffe’s Can’t Dance’ written by Giles Andreae.

Gerald the giraffe longs to dance, but his legs are too skinny and his neck is too long. At the Jungle Dance, the warthogs waltz, the chimps cha-cha, and the lions tango. "Giraffes can't dance," they all jeer when it's Gerald's turn to prance. But with some sound advice from a wise cricket, Gerald starts swaying to his own sweet tune.

A wonderfully illustrated, fun tale depicting an important message through Gerald, the giraffe. All the jungle animals have their own specialty dance except poor Gerald. Their teasing and bullying has Gerald feeling sad and bad about himself. However, with a little advice and encouragement, he soon learns it's OK to be different and those who are just "Need a different song." Sashaying and boogying, Gerald finds his rhythm and shines.

We had fun participating in a special Giraffes can’t Dance yoga session where we stretched, curled, boogied and played different instruments.

We drew our own wax resist giraffes and painted the background in different colours using water colour paints.

Please enjoy our painting showcased in this week’s article.

RECEPTION

Reception continued with the Minibeast topic this week. We learnt about different minibeasts; their names, whether they had wings or not, whether they had legs or no legs. Then we classified them according to these groups. We completed minibeast dot-to-dots up to 30. We made minibeasts using playdough and some creations were fabulous.

We also celebrated Endangered Species Day and found out that there are plants and animals that are endangered. We leant what endangered means and found out some information about some of the animals in the world that are endangered. Some of our favourite activities this week were drawing our own special giraffes in crayon and then painting over them in watercolours. All the giraffes were stunning and so unique!

We could select various animal masks and had many laughs having conversations with different animals!
