SCIENCE

Year 12 students worked hard this week and studied the properties of various elements of the Periodic Table. They had a practical session on Halogens and were investigating the solubility of halogens in different solvents: water, alcohols, organic solvents. The halogen they worked with was iodine. Finally, the students discovered that iodine is soluble in various solvents (alcohol and organic solvents), but it produces solutions of different colours in these solvents, which was an interesting fact. Afterwards the students were able to support their results with some theory they studied earlier (the theory of intermolecular forces) and explained why iodine turned out to be insoluble in water, but soluble in other solvents. Well done!

MATH

Year 9 students started a new topic Probability and have learnt about sample space, complimentary events and relative frequency. The have tested their intuition about the probability of certain events through different quizzes and were quite surprised when what seems to be the obvious answer doesn't quite match with the real outcome.Year 11 students have started a topic on converting between units of length, area and volume and calculated what was the length of Earth's equator in millimetres and human intestines in kilometres. Year 12 and 13 students have started revision in Core mathematics units as some of them will have their first round of exams in January, in Mechanics students have learnt how to solve problems about particles being in equilibrium by resolving forces.

RUSSIAN

This week the Y10 &Y11 students focused on writing, studying grammatical rules and translating in Russian class. For the main part, the students did various compositions for different themes such as favorite books and movies, future aspirations, study and work, technologies. Those are all part of the preparations for the IGCSE Russian exam. As well as that, the students did practice work with past papers to see what questions they could be met with during the exam. The work completed was overall well done and has shown improvement in general.
