YEAR 3
This week, Year 3 sat their very first online assessments in Maths and English. The results will help inform the teacher of the students’ next learning and teaching steps. Each assessment took just over half an hour and everyone said that they enjoyed the experience very much. This week in English, the students have published a booklet about themselves. They have used their knowledge of non-fiction texts, using subheadings to organize their writing into paragraphs. In Maths we have been frogs! Jumping the number line helps students to learn to subtract mentally as it makes very clear how many tens and units need to be 'jumped' to get from one number to another. On Friday we made fossils as part of our Science unit. Look out for the results. During PHSE (Personal Health and Safety), year 3 worked together creating posters explaining how to continue to keep safe during the Covid 19 epidemic.
YEAR 4
During this week, English and Topic have been combined to provide us with the opportunity to read a story, titled ‘A Day in the Life of a Roman Legionary’. It was very interesting to discover that, although the Roman legionaries were the most efficient soldiers in the ancient world, daily life for them was far from glamorous. A job they detested was being assigned to clean the latrines, but they took pride in maintaining their weapons and equipment. In Maths, we practised adding and subtracting, using the compact and expanded methods. In Science, we learnt how to draw circuit diagrams, using symbols. We drew circuit diagrams of circuits in series and parallel circuits to show how they differ. In French, we learnt the French words for close members of a family, such as mother, father, sister and brother. In ICT, we enjoyed accessing LightBot to do puzzle games, based on coding. In PSHE, we discovered the importance of adopting a growth mindset, rather than a fixed mindset. This means thinking positively. We must avoid saying, “I’ll never do it! It’s too hard!” Rather, we must say, “This may take some time and effort.”
YEAR 5
What an interesting week it has been in Year 5. In Maths, we needed to use our multiplication knowledge as we learned about how to identify multiples, factors and common factors. We also learned about prime and composite numbers. In English we have been reading myths and fables which links nicely to our Ancient Greece topic. We read the myth of Odysseus and Polyphemus and worked to plan and write our own sequels to the story. In Topic, we studied the Battle of Marathon and learned how the tactics of the Athenian army led to victory, despite being heavily outnumbered. We also learned about some of the Greek Gods and used our learning to create a new webpage on our websites. In Science, we learned about how the planets of our Solar System were once thought to be “Wandering Stars” because they move across the sky. We discovered that the invention of the telescope was key in helping scientists of the past to understand that these “stars” were, in fact, planets orbiting the Sun. All in all, a very productive week
YEAR 6
In Science this term the children in Year 6 have been learning about hereditary and evolution. As I am sure you can imagine we have had some very interesting discussions. This week, following some research into how fossils are formed we attempted to make our own fossils using Plaster of Paris.
