YEAR 1

This Week in Year 1

It has been a most interesting week in Year 1, learning all about the traditions surrounding the Japanese New Year. The children have worked hard together to research information and have helped to write the script for their performance in this year’s EIS Winter Concert. It is very creatively constructed and Ms. Natalia and I could not be prouder of the children who have worked together in such a united team. It has a little something to entertain everyone!

Our focus story for this week has been the traditional Japanese story, Peach Boy. Filled with terrible demons and fierce battles, where good conquers in the end, our Year 1 imaginative warriors have simply loved making their story maps for our Talk for Writing sessions. I feel very privileged to listen to the children as they discuss the story plot and become absorbed in the story as they draw the illustrations that will later help them to write their stories.

Of course, acting out the story of Peach Boy has been magnificent; we certainly have a few potential Oscar winners of the future in our midst!

In Mathematics this week, the children have amazed us by how quickly they have mastered telling the time. Using the clocks that they made on Monday, everyone was able to read the time on the hour and most children mastered telling the time to half past the hour too. They are now beginning to notice and tell us when it is time for lunch at midday and time to get ready to go home at 3:00pm!

In Art, the children have made some spectacular Japanese fans to use for the Winter Concert. Marcus also led a lesson to show his friends how to paint with marbles. The effect was very impressive and reminded us of the work by the art master, Jackson Pollock.

It has been another great and very productive week.

YEAR 2

Year 2 West

December already!! Where is the time flying? Well, they say time flies when you’re having fun, fun and learning as we have done this week in year 2 EIS West.

English was interesting this week as students looked to find verbs in sentences, as well as read a silly story together about a bear that came to babysit. Students have been doing consistent progress in their reading program, and this is evident during guided reading when time is given to students to share their skills with their peers.

In Math, students explored 3-d shapes: how to explain shapes in terms of vertices, edges, and faces. Did you know a cube and a cuboid have the same amount of vertices, edges, and faces, yet these 3-d shapes look entirely different!

Science was all about absorbancy; what material would be best for a towel? Not tin-foil or plastic we found out this week! Students enjoyed experimenting with water, watching to see if strips of foil, plastic, paper, and felt would absorb.

The days are drawing closer to our concert day; our play will be recorded for viewing, as due to COVID regulations, we cannot invite parents on site. However, for your viewing pleasure, our little performance will be taken on video and shared with you all; more information on this in the days to come.

Wishing all a restful and happy weekend!
