YEAR 1

Year 1 have been exploring paper this week! In science, our topic is ‘Materials’ and we have been describing the properties of paper; what is made out of paper in the world around us and how we could make paper stronger. We enjoyed rolling up paper into a cylinder and testing how many books we could balance on top of it. The highest amount we managed was 37 books! We then used lots of junk made of paper to make a house, which linked into our Topic of ‘Houses and Homes.’ We had to challenge ourselves and problem solve to find ways to attach the different parts of our junk model house together. In maths, we have been making number bonds to 5 and 10. We found 2 numbers which add together to make 5 and 10 and learnt how to represent this using numicon and multilink as well as recording them in a number sentence. In phonics, we have been learning about rhyme within one syllable words such as cat, pat, mat, sat and gnat. We enjoyed playing rhyming bingo and listening to the rhyming books in the ‘Oi Frog!’ series by Kes Gray and Jim Field. Year 1 have been superstars this week and are really settling back into their school routines and friendships.

YEAR 2

Year 2 have had a wonderful week! This week we are learning about shapes. We found some unusual shapes including heptagons, octagons, nonagons and decagons. Do you know how many sides these shapes have? In Topic, Year 2 enjoyed looking at the big atlases and finding many different countries on the map. We discussed how the climate changes in different parts of the world. We discussed reasons why different animals are suited to different climates. In PSHE, we talked about setting goals/aims and Year 2 shared what they would like to learn about this year. In English, we are learning to spell ‘ay’words and learning that the ‘ai’ sound can be spelt in different ways. We did lots of writing this week! Year 2 wrote about their favourite animal and their favourite food! Year 2 have started to use ActiveLearn and SeeSaw for homework, we enjoy watching the photo/video or picture responses on our big screen. Fantastic work this week Year 2!
