Year 6
Welcome back Year 6! It was so great to see all of you again…. Even if it is through a computer screen. It sounds like everyone had a very restful time away from learning, but all were very eager to pick up right where we left off. In English this week we read various short stories and looked at the authors use of language and vocabulary, while in Sciences we began to learn about famous inventions/inventors and their contribution to scientific discoveries. In Topic, we began to explore geographical changes in our world and why these things may be occurring. In Art we made some terrific looking Origami, which was a bit of a stress reliever I am sure from all the hard Algebraic Maths we have been doing all week. Everyone worked so well and I am glad to see how well you all returned to our distance learning!
Year 5
Year 5 have worked hard to try to settle back into the school routine. We enjoyed hearing about the fun activities everyone did during their break. Our new topic is Magnificent Mountains. Year 5 thought of loads of quality questions they want answered and shared ideas of what learning projects we could do. Popular suggestions were finding mountains in the solar system, interviewing somebody who has hiked a mountain, writing an adventure story with a mysterious 'Yetty' like character and having a debate about living near volcanoes. If you are reading this and have climbed a mountain, please contact Miss Abi. In English, we explored a range of poetic devices, compared different poets and started to think about writing our own mountain poems. During Maths, we explored rotation, reflection and translation. We created symbols, actions and diagrams to help us identify the difference between them. Amazingly, Nikita shared an interactive way for us to use Zoom to help model how to reflect.
Year 3
It was so lovely to see Year 3's smiling faces and catch up with everyone’s holiday news on Tuesday morning. We got straight to work writing a letter about our holiday highlights. We have begun an exciting new mystery novel called Ottoline and the Yellow Cat and will be learning more about predicting, inferring and the features of mystery novels. This week in Maths our learning was based around multiplication and division family of facts. It was so good to see everyone super engaged in their learning. The Rainforest is our topic this term and we have already recorded what we know about rainforests and questions that we want to research. There is so much to learn! To begin with, we are learning exactly what a rainforest is and learning about animals who live in the rainforest.
Year 4
We were delighted to get back to our online lessons on Tuesday. We had so much news to share about our holiday activities. Our theme during Summer Term is ‘Rivers of the World’; this week, we looked at the features of a river from its source to its mouth. In English, we discovered that there are five types of determiners, the first of which comprises definite and indefinite articles. Our first Maths learning task focussed on place value, using 5-digit numbers. We also practised working with negative numbers, using the thermometer. In Art, we created landscapes, featuring the artist, Mark Webster’s interesting abstract geometric shapes
