Year 3

We had a surprise guest hiding under the bean bags this week. See if you can spot who it is. One of year 3’s favourite Math’s warm up games is adding, subtracting and multiplying using dice. This week we used 4 dice and worked in pairs. We had to use lots of mental strategies and had to explain them to our partners. ‘Enough for Everyone’ is our topic and our big question is how can we use less plastic in our school. We have already looked at some of the damage we are doing to our planet and we are super keen to make some positive changes. We love doing art with Miss Sonya and this week we have begun drawing dream catchers using pastel and water colour techniques.

Year 4

This week, in English, we recounted in writing the sequence of events leading up to the forming of The Pony Express, and why the mail service ended. In Maths, we practised adding amounts of money using written and mental methods. We also practised subtraction, choosing appropriate mental strategies: counting up or taking away. In Science lessons, we began learning about electricity, beginning with experiments involving static electricity. In Topic lessons, in a new unit, titled Leisure and Entertainment, we focused on the history of film in the twentieth century. In Art, we completed the portraits of the Spanish surrealist painter, Salvador Dali.

Year 5

This week we have introduced our new topics. In Theme, we are learning about Trade & Economics, we used concept circles and Fed In Facts to learn new vocabulary and then we created KWL’s to share what we know, what questions we want to answer and what projects we would like to learn about. Year 5 came up with creative ideas. Katya said it would be fun to have competition between the boys and the girls to sell products at school. In Science, we are learning about marvelous materials. Year 5 discussed the advantages and disadvantages of having a tea pot made from chocolate. We continued to look at Henry’s Freedom Box in English as children took part in a decision alley about the doctor’s role and then carried out a debate about modern day slavery.

Year 6

This week we had many opportunities to enhance our learning. In Maths we had the opportunity to learn about planes and grids, and use new terminology such as the “mean” or average number within a set of numbers. In English, we continued making predictions about the book we are reading in class and continued our story board depiction of the major events occurring in the book. This led into Topic, where we learned more about the lifestyle before WWII and how it changed after the outbreak of the war. In Sciences we are learning about light and sound, and how these each travel relative to their individual properties. What a great week!
