Year 6
In Year 6, we had a great week filled with lots of learning and fun. This week in English, we had the opportunity to better understand our “Carbon Footprint” and how each individual decision a person makes can have an impact on the Earth and the environment. In Maths we continued learning more about decimal place value, fractions written as numbers and many more concepts we will use once we return the classroom. In Sciences, we had the opportunity to understand how climate change is occurring, and to understand why we are celebrating Earth Week and Earth Day on April 22nd. In Topic we finished our E Book on the Second World War II. We learned a lot this week and the students all worked very hard! Well done Year 6 : )
Year 3
Fractions, fractions, fractions. Everyone worked hard and had fun learning about fractions this week. M&M fractions was the best followed by making a fraction friend where we had to describe fractions of a shape.
Our Science experiment was awesome. Check it out in the photos. We submerged an egg in vinegar and wondered what would happen. The best part was REALLY looking or observing what happened. Everyone made excellent observations and learnt some new scientific words.
During this important Earth week, we read heaps of books about what ways we can make changes to making our air, water and environments cleaner. Small things like turning off the water while we brush our teeth, refusing plastic bags and using cloth bags instead when we go shopping. We hadn’t really thought about how to save power by turning off lights and unplugging computers when we don’t need them. There are so many little things we can do to make a difference!
Year 4
During the fifth week of e-learning, we focussed on ‘Earth Day’, the theme of which is ‘climate action’. In English, we read a very interesting article about Yoshi, the world-famous loggerhead turtle. Yoshi is amazing! After being released by the Two Oceans Aquarium in Cape Town in 2017, she has travelled 40000 kilometres to the West Australian coast, where scientists hope she will lay eggs. In Maths, looked at how the Paris Agreement hopes to reduce greenhouse gases by 2040. We drew two bar graphs comparing sources used to generate electricity in 2018 with sources that will be used in 2040. We discovered that, in 2040, renewable sources, such as wind and solar power, should significantly help to reduce air pollution. Our combined Topic and Science project focussed on creating interesting data presentations on ‘Earth Day’, using Microsoft PowerPoint! It was a busy, but exciting week!
Year 5
Year 5 have worked hard during Awesome Earth Week. Excitingly, we read Duffy's Lucky Escape, investigated the language and wrote a diary with empathy. Then we planned and wrote our own adventure story where an animal had to escape a dangerous environmental situation. Andrian wrote a great story about a deer getting caught up in a forest fire caused by humans when camping. Max wrote about an unlucky duck feeding on plastic. Nina wrote about a monkey that lost its home due to deforestation. Fortunately, they all lived free and happily. In Maths, we have constructing and analysed graphs showing the rising temperatures. In Theme, we acted as Eco Warriors by creating a class book full of problems and solutions for environmental issues.
