GEOGRAPHY

The students have been absolutely brilliant with the online learning. They have been attending conferences and completing their work. They are still submitting work and have assured me it will all be done before the break. The Year 7 students completed Rivers, looking at how water get to our homes with the topic “Our Water Supply”. Year 8 students completed their topic Coasts focusing on “Industries found along coasts” and the Year 9 students completed their topic Russia, zooming in on Sakha: Russia’s biggest region. I would like to take this opportunity to thank firstly all the students for their commitment and the parents for the support they have given my students.

To all my Muslim students – Ramadan Kareem. May The Almighty watch over you and your family during this time of sacrifice and reflection.

HISTORY

This week Year 7 have been putting their learning about different types of medieval castles into practice by working on a plan for a model of a castle. They will then move on to build a model castle using items from around the home such as cardboard from food boxes and plastic bottles.

Year 8 have produced some great independently researched projects on Europe in 1789, providing them with wider context for the French Revolution. Some of their work has been displayed on a Padlet wall allowing them to share their work with their peers.

MATH

Students are just geared up to go on holiday and making sure everything is done and handed in.

Year 7 Have started with a new topic about percentages and how important it is in today’s world. They are using it to workout different real-life scenarios that they have identified and where they think they will use it.

The Year 8’s are revisiting fractions and decimals as to understand using it to deduce different information from graphs especially pie charts.

The Year 9’s started studying right – angled triangles to determine the different trigonometric ratios. They are deducing the three basic one’s: Sine (Sin), Cosine (Cos) and Tangent (Tan) and how to remember them using the acronyms SOH CAH TOA.

Ivan in Year 11 will finish his exams this week. Good Luck to him. He has worked hard, and I am immensely proud of him.

ENGLISH

We have continued with the pupils’ language development this week, furthering the class’ skills and enjoying the competitive aspect of the exercises.

The work we have done covers different language skill sets. There is standard reading comprehension in which the pupils are asked to select the correct answer from a set of several possible ones, with each one having a similar, yet crucially different, meaning. This advances into choosing a specific person or event or venue or other entity which is the correct choice for a set of precise details.

Another type of exercise is gap-fill in which a word or phrase is missing from a sentence. It starts with a multiple choice but evolves into none and the pupil has to wrack his or her brain to find the correct wording. And of course, there is writing in which the pupils’ language, structure and fluency is tested.

These exercises are always fun to do and, more importantly, help the children understand the English language more acutely and thus improve their usage.

MUSIC

Year 7 and 8 were very active and productive with the project My Favorite Singer. All of them madethe presentations about their favorite musicians, discussed their musical styles and career. Year 9 has explored New Orleans Jazz. After they composed ragtimes, they learnt how to play famous early jazz tune When The Saints Go Marching In. Also, they discovered that Louis Armstrong is not the astronaut who went to the Moon but the great New Orlean jazz trumpeter and singer.

SCIENCE

In Biology and Chemistry we wrote End of Unit Tests which will form part of the marks for the Reports. We further continued the exploration of Chemical Reactions in Chemistry, and learned important concepts that will be needed in future studies of Chemistry. The topic of Reproduction is still the major focus in Biology from Years 7 to 9.

PSHE

As we reached the end of yet another busy week, we realise that we have also reached the end of a busy term. During this term we learnt so much and developed in so many ways, and it is with pride that we realise we have mastered the art of Distance Learning. It is also the time to reflect on our progress, and to evaluate our progress. The students will be participating in an online Survey regarding Distance Learning, and they need to submit this survey before the school closes for the holidays on Tuesday.
